The Snow Queen, Honor C. Appleton

Every now and then...

I get a little stuck. Oftentimes, I try to just work through it, sitting at the keyboard and telling my fingers that they must find the right words. Othertimes (i.e. rarer times), I take a break, let my mind roam, and sketch. If the weather's agreeable, I might even fetch the camera out for a stroll...

The Women from the Boab Tree

The Women From the Boab Tree

From a recent short story. If you're wondering about the tree, it's a boab, or baobab tree. I don't know why, but we call them boabs in Australia--and seemingly only in Australia.

Fearn

Fearn

I drew this while thinking about a short story. As you can see, I'm not an artist, but I often find that letting my pencil skim the page allows my mind to flutter and flit about the right cages until I'm ready to write.

Parrot

My learner-style drawing aside, if you're wondering why this bird is a parrot, (also known as a psittacine), here are the three major characteristics:

-- long tail feathers that hang significantly past the body. Note: not all systems include this characteristic.

--curved beak with the hook extending over the bottom half. There's a bit more to this, but it's too long to go into.

-- two toes pointing forward, two toes pointing back. (This is hard to see in my rendering.)

Common parrots: budgerigars (parakeets); cockatoos; African Greys; and lovebirds (peach faces).

Boab

Boab

Boab, again. I'm really quite fascinated by them.

I'm told this looks more like the back of a leaf then a tulip. It's disheartening, but seemingly true.
